It is a distinct honor for me to assume my duty as the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in Ottawa on 17 December 2018 coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Turkish-Canadian diplomatic relations.
Despite the distance between our countries, Turkish-Canadian relations are deeply rooted in history. The Newfoundland Regiment, which participated in the Çanakkale (Gallipoli) Campaign assumed an important place in the history of our relations, which has been defined in terms of peace and cooperation today. Both countries have worked under the same umbrella of all institutions of the free and democratic world, and established alliance ties within NATO. Today, Turkey and Canada continue to work together in various international organizations including but not limited to NATO, UN, G-20, OSCE and, OECD.
Economic cooperation constitutes an important pillar of our bilateral relations. Latest progress in this area has been pleasing. Our Embassy will continue to work closely with Turkish and Canadian authorities, as well as the representatives of business communities, in order to boost the existing positive trend and to increase our trade and mutual investments to the level of our true economic potential.
In an age that brings distant nations together through means of modern transportation, technology, internet and social media and removes the obstacles posed by remote geographies, the promotion of Turkey and Turkish culture in Canada remains to be one of our priorities. We believe that the intensification of tourism and cultural relations will deepen the ties between the Turkish and Canadian peoples, paving the way for further deepening of our relations in all areas.
Respect for democratic principles, equality of opportunity, promotion of gender equality and sensitivity to environmental issues are among our shared values. Turkey follows the positive outcomes of Canada’s conciliatory policy towards the first nations and wishes to see this important part of the Canadian society start assuming its role in the growth of our bilateral economic and cultural relations.
Our citizens and students living in Canada, as well as our businesspeople who have bilateral economic and commercial ties also have an important responsibility for furthering our relations. Essentially, Turkish-Canadians, Turkish students and Turkish businesspeople have been an important bridge of friendship between the two countries. In order to further strengthen Turkish-Canadian cooperation, to promote rich Turkish culture, history and traditional Turkish hospitality, to effectively communicate our national priorities, and to prevent initiatives that target Turkey, our Embassy will continue to work in close solidarity with the members of the Turkish-Canadian community who cultivate their ties with their homeland.
I would like to take this opportunity to underline that our Embassy’s and our Consulate Generals’ doors are always open to our citizens, students and businesspeople. We will continue to utilize all our means to resolve their problems, address their needs and provide the best services.
I am confident that we will carry Turkish-Canadian relations to levels that reflect the real potential of the two countries, in line with the spirit of alliance ties and on the basis of mutual understanding and cooperation. We derive our strength from the deep rooted and rich Turkish-Canadian relations, as well as, the presence of the Turkish-Canadian community, Turkish students and our business people.
In that vein, I would like to extend my best wishes for your health, happiness, and prosperity, and invite you to visit our beautiful country, Turkey.
