Message Of The Turkish Ambassador Selçuk Ünal To The Members Of The Canadian Turkish Community And The Turkish Citizens

Ottava Büyükelçiliği 09.09.2014

Honourable Members of the Canadian Turkish Community, my Esteemed Fellow Citizens,

I arrived in Canada and assumed my duties as of today, September 9, 2014 as the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in Ottawa.

I am honoured to be serving for the protection of peace, prosperity, health and rights of my fellow citizens who constitute the basis of social bonds between Turkey and Canada.

It is also a special honour for me to represent the Republic of Turkey in Canada as son of a Turkish family who worked in Vancouver between 1967 and 1969.

Our presence in Canada with the first immigration of citizens of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, has increasingly developed and qualitatively changed over the years. The presence of the Turkish community in Canada constitutes the most important aspect of the Turkish-Canadian relations.

I believe all the members of the Turkish community is an asset for Canada. You have embraced the contemporary values and proved yourselves in every field of social life in multicultural society of Canada. You are net contributors to this country.

Members of our community have established a harmony within the Canadian society. The solidarity we will illustrate first with our kinsmen and other brotherly societies as well as all other resident societies, which we share a common history and values within the framework of historical friendships and harmony, will be an excellent reflection of our tolerance and cultural richness in this country.

During my tenure, my first priority will be to strengthen the presence of my esteemed fellow citizens and members of our community in Canada and to serve you to the best of my capacity.

To provide the best and high quality public services to all of you is the “Raison D’être” for myself, as the 27th Turkish Ambassador assigned to Canada on the 70th anniversary of our relations, for my colleagues at the Consulate General in Toronto, Honorary Consulate Generals and Consulates across the country. We are here to reach out to you with the strong support of our State.

In order to meet the requirements of our citizens in an expeditious way, we will continue our efforts to provide consular services to our citizens more frequently especially in distant provinces through “Mobile Consulate Services” and increasing the number of all our missions to reach every region across Canada.

Today, Turkey has become a more visible country in international fora with its diplomatic representation, economic strength and increasing influence as a responsible member of the international community. In this regard, every development in the political, economic, commercial and cultural relations between Turkey and Canada will directly or indirectly strengthen the presence and visibility of the Canadian Turkish Community and our citizens.

Within this framework, we also expect the support of our citizens and members of our community to all our efforts in order to further develop the relations between our two countries, protecting the rights and interests of our community via contributing to its development and increasing the visibility of our country and our nation herein Canada.

I extend my sincerest wishes and regards to all of our citizens.
